Sometime in the early hours of July 4, 1885, the Statue of Liberty disappeared from its perch on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. For weeks, there was no trace of the 300-foot-tall monument, leaving the city—and the nation—stunned.

It’s unclear exactly how the statue of liberty disappeared. One theory is that it was dismantled and sold for scrap metal during the American Civil War. Another theory is that it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1867.

In the trick, Copperfield raised a sheet in front of the statue and when he dropped it, Lady Liberty was gone. However, she was actually just hidden behind one of the towers that held the sheet up. David moved the platform everyone was on, using loud music so the audience wouldn’t know or feel the shift.

This is a clever trick that Copperfield uses to create the illusion that he is disappearing into the wall. His assistant is hidden in the corner and steps into the light after Copperfield enters the box. This creates the shadow that we see and gives the impression that Copperfield is disappearing.
